The Way We Dress and Communication

There is a proverb that says in effect, "What you say to me tells me what you think about me but what you wear tells me what you think about yourself." The way we dress is a statement. It tells the world how we perceive ourselves.Communication has little to do with the words that we use. It is done mostly through intonation, body language and various signals that fly below the radar of the persons that are trying to communicate. The choice of the words, "trying to communicate" was done intentionally. It does not matter how much we try, how careful we are or how well intentioned that we are, exact communication simply does not exists except in very rare occasions where the message is so simple that it simply cannot be misconstrued. What we call communication would be more aptly defined as leaving an impression. The messages that we try to convey are summed up as a mental image and sometimes as a simple feeling by the receiver of the communication.Except in very specific occasions, we don't perceive what is being communicated in exact words. Those words form and image or a concept in our mind that sums up for us what has been read or heard. To complicate matters even more, communications are colored by the mood and everything that is perceived by the senses of the receiver of the communication. One only has to look at the various Courts to understand how complex communications are. Judges and lawyers often have to debate for months to determine the exact meaning of a law that was painstakingly crafted by experts trying to avoid ambiguity and misunderstanding. The United States Constitution, a very carefully crafted document, was adopted on September 17, 1787 and it has been debated ever since. That says volumes about the exactitude of communications.Given all these considerations, we must first conclude and accept the fact that what we try to convey in our communications has a very good chance of being misconstrued. So, it should be no surprise if the reactions that we receive when trying to communicate are not what we expected.Secondly, extra care must be given in order to do everything in our power to convey an image in the listener's mind that will approximate as much as possible what we are trying to say and that should start with the way that we dress.Even before anything is said, the listener already has made up his mind as to who we are and where we are coming from. That opinion is based on the way that we are dressed and on the image that we represent. The rock star image will fail miserably in trying to convey an image of stalwartness and common sense just as the suit and tie will fail to send the message of the party boy. There are acceptable standards for every lifestyle and every category of people. It is for us to judge and decide what accoutrement would best convey our basic message to the world.A commercial airline pilot with loose hair all the way to his shoulders might be as competent as another one with a short haircut but will certainly not inspire as much confidence to his passengers. Our culture has defined specific dressing codes to convey specific messages. Following the code is certainly not mandatory but choosing to ignore it is certainly not the wisest thing to do, that is, if we intend to communicate as accurately as possible.

The Elements of Interview Success - Tip 1 Dress Impress

Your carefully crafted CV is what landed you the interview, but once you walk in the door of a prospective employer's office, you can no longer rely on just your list of specialised skills or impressive work experience. In part 1 of this series, we offer top tips on how to dress for success so you do yourself justice. Why first impressions matter

Like it or not, your interviewer will make up their mind about you within 30 seconds of first meeting you, and this decision will be largely based on your appearance. Many people will think that this is an unfair way to assess people, but this is your chance to gain an edge on your competition. If an employer has a group of candidates who are all qualified, with similar skills and work experience, how do they decide on which person to choose? By dressing well, you will make a good first impression on your interviewer, which will set the tone of your interview. The way you present yourself will make you stand out from other applicants, and in a fiercely competitive job market, any advantage you can give yourself could be the difference between landing and losing the job. The planning stage Just like any other stage of job hunting, research is imperative to your success. What is the company culture like, and how does this influence the dress code? Call the organisation in advance to see what they expect you to wear, or do some research on their website. If you dress like you already work there, then it will be easier for your interviewer to picture you in the role. Make sure to prepare in advance. Choose a few outfits that may be suitable and then try them on, assessing each look based on these factors: · Do you still look like yourself? · Do you look like you could work for the company you're interviewing for? · Do you feel confident? · Do you feel physically comfortable in the clothes? · Are the clothes in good condition, and do they fit you properly? If you answer yes to all of these questions, then you've found the right outfit. Prepare in advance by making sure it's washed, pressed, and ready to go. Need some help? Tips for interview-friendly attire For the ladies: · Keep it professional by choosing high necklines and low hemlines · If you're known for your accessorizing, try to tone it down. Lots of jewellery is just more to fiddle with, which could be distracting for your interviewer · Suits look smart on any body type · If you go with a dress or skirt, wear tights · Put on some makeup: use a little foundation, blush, mascara, and lipstick. This will create a polished look and draw attention to your face, allowing your potential employer to focus on what you're saying · If you're comfortable walking in heels, then choose a modest, business-appropriate pair. If you have a hard time keeping your balance, a flat shoe in patent leather will work since they look smart with a suit · Make sure your nail polish isn't chipped - this always looks messy and will reflect negatively on you · If you twiddle with your hair, tie it back so it doesn't distract you in the interview. For the gentlemen: · Wear a fitted, dark suit. The fit is important; if your jacket is too big, it gives the impression that you're playing dress-up · Make sure your shirt is lighter than your jacket and tie · Choose a tie with a subtle pattern · Refrain from mixing any patterns · Shine your shoes; studies have revealed that women check out people's footwear when they first meet you. This is a great chance for you to make a good impression on your female interviewer. For everyone: · Outerwear: This is the first thing your prospective employer will see. Make sure that your coat and hat look professional as well. Show up in a classic-cut pea coat or modern trench, but leave windbreakers and other types of casual coats at home · Have glasses? Put them on: A study by Henleys eyewear revealed that 90% of people believe that those with glasses are attractive, intelligent, and approachable, while 1/3 of adults think glasses make people look professional · Keep it simple: Don't wear any items that are unnecessary or may be a distraction to you or your interviewer · Your success is in the bag: Refrain from colourful backpacks with logos that may make you appear juvenile or unprofessional. Sport a bag that is neutral, compact, and complements your outfit. Anxious about your upcoming interview? In part 2 of this series, we'll discuss the different types of interview styles you should be prepared for, and offer tips on how to best handle each one. The History of the White Wedding Dress

As a youngster -- or perhaps even as an adult -- have you ever sat dreamily imagining yourself in a fairytale wedding dress, about to marry your very own Prince Charming? And, what colour is the wedding dress? The chances are it's a white one. Millions of girls and women that dream of the perfect marriage have a vision of the perfect white wedding dress in their minds. But why white? Where did this tradition come from?Women Haven't Always Been Marrying in WhiteIn fact, in the grand scheme of things, the tradition isn't even all that old. The white wedding dress of today is deep-seated tradition, and for many is worn to signify virtue as well as uphold tradition. Millions -- in fact billions -- of women all over the world start thinking about the perfect white wedding gown before they have even found the perfect partner.Britain is a place that is rife with traditions and legends, so it is little wonder that the tradition of the white wedding dress was started by the English Monarchy. It was the wedding of Queen Victoria that spawned the interest and popularity of white wedding dresses as we know them today.Queen Victoria married Albert of Saxe in 1840, and wore what would then have been considered a flamboyant white gown. Of course, this did not start the tradition immediately; however, many women saw this as a statement of class and style, and copied the Queen by also getting married in white. The white wedding dress in those days had nothing to do with being virtuous -- it was all about wealth. Getting married in a white, extravagant gown was a sign that you could afford to buy a dress that you would never be able to wear again because of its style and colour (whites were not easy to clean in those days as they are today!).Of course, women still continued to be married in various colours and styles of dress -- it was only the vain and the wealthy that insisted on white to follow in the footsteps of the wealthy Monarch. However, during Edwardian times, the white wedding dress once more soared to new heights of popularity, as Coco Chanel unveiled its new knee-length white wedding dress, complete with extravagant train.Even so, with the depression that followed World War I and the approach of World War II, many women continued to make do with whatever type of dress they could afford, and this went on for decades. Some women would marry in a short white informal wedding dress, which could then be dyed and used as an everyday dress. Again, it was only the fabulously wealthy that could really afford to splurge on an elaborate gown. However, from the 1950s onwards, as the world watched Hollywood stars, royalty and members of high society get wed in stunning white gowns, the tradition of white became signed and sealed.Wedding Dresses of Different Colours: A bit of folkloreAs with many other things in life, there is much folklore and legend surrounding the various other colours that brides have been known to wed in. One old rhyme seems to sum up these notions:
Married in white, you have chosen all right.

Married in green, ashamed to be seen.

Married in red, you will wish yourself dead.

Married in blue, you will always be true.

Married in yellow, ashamed of your fellow.

Married in black, you will wish yourself back.

Married in pink, your spirits will sink
Of course, most people will think nothing of this poem, apart from the fact that each colour has been coupled with a meaning that just happened to rhyme very well. We all know that there are plenty of people that have married in pinks, blues and every other colour, and have enjoyed a long and happy marriage. And we certainly know that there are plenty of people that have married in white, who have not prospered quite so well.Ordering Your Wedding Dress OnlineLuckily, legend and folklore has given way to individuality in recent years, and brides now enjoy getting married in the colour of their choice. Both celebrities and everyday women have injected their wedding dresses with their own sense of style and personality, and we have seen women marrying in colours ranging from delicate ivory to deepest red and even black.Royalty and high society still tend to favour the tradition of marrying in white. However, since simply wearing a white wedding gown can no longer mark their stature due to the availability of the white wedding dress, they now do this by infusing the dress with the most expensive silks, pearls and material possible, making it worth a king's ransom by the time it is finished.Luckily, we don't all have to pay a fortune to look stunning for our wedding day, and there is now so much choice in colour, style, material and design that we can get married looking just the way we want -- and without having to sell all of our worldly possessions to do so!The Internet is a great source for wedding dresses. You can enjoy excellent value for your money and unrivalled choice, enabling you to achieve just the look and theme that you want for your special day. Whether you want a full-on white gown with all the trimmings, a simple and elegant ivory dress, an informal yet classy wedding dress or something totally unique in a rich, vibrant colour, the Internet will provide you with access to the perfect choice. You will enjoy access to a wide range of dress styles online, including:
Traditional wedding gowns

Informal wedding dresses

Designer wedding dresses

Coloured wedding gowns

Gothic or medieval style wedding gowns

Short wedding dresses

Long wedding dresses

You can also select from a wide choice of material, so you can feel and look as stunning as you dare, and with the great quality available online you can cherish your special dress for years to come -- perhaps even pass it down to future generations.

Wedding dress out of your dreams

Getting a gown for a wedding is probably the most important thing for a future bride to do. Very often it happens, that while a groom-to-be drives around the town and makes necessary reservations for a reception venue, music band, and so on, his fiancée is doing only one thing during that time - namely, choosing a wedding dress. Indeed, she is going to spend one of the most important moment in her life in that dress, not to mention the fact that hundreds of photographs are going to be taken, therefore, she would like to look just perfect and nothing less. To ensure that, it is important to know what makes a perfect wedding gown and which things one should avoid. Following these rules will certainly help you get a dress for your wedding straight out of your dreams. The first and most important thing is to follow the tradition. Recently, more and more brides decide on unorthodox wedding dresses, for example in a color different than white. Unfortunately, most often than not, it is a bad idea that ends up with a fashion catastrophe. As you cannot relieve or repeat your wedding, such a women will have to watch photographs from a ruined wedding for the rest of her life. If you stick with the tradition, however, you exclude such risk. After all, a white gown has proven itself to be beautiful enough times to know that it is a safe bet. Moreover, the majority of your guests practically expect you to be dressed like that and you cannot simply ignore them as they may feel insulted. Therefore, a white gown should be the design of your choice.

When it comes to small details and ornaments, a wedding dress should be rather modest. This type of dress really does not go very well with various kinds of ruffles, ornaments, and laces. If they constitute only a small detail of a gown that adds it some character then it is totally acceptable. However, if there is too much of them the gown begins to look as a white version of outfits used by samba dancers. You really do not want to look like that as, once again, you will not want to watch the photographs from your wedding seeing yourself dressed like that. Finally, a good wedding dress has to be comfortable. Obviously, because of the fact that it has to have a corset bodice and a round bottom it can never be as comfortable as a summer gown, yet, you should pay a very close attention to whether you will be able to dance in it freely or not. After all, do not forget that for the most time you will be dancing so you have to make sure your dress will not get in your way. To cut the long story short, the most important thing is to follow the tradition. Do not try any other designs than a long, white one. Apart from that, you just have to make sure it is relatively modest and that you will be able to dance in it.

Styles of this kind of dresses on the market available are so many. And generally speaking, a-line or empire cut dresses are suitable for most figures. And one small details about selecting your beach wedding gown is that they are not as formal as wedding dresses worn to a traditional church wedding. So there are certain strategies to shop for the right wedding dress among all the beach wedding dresses. Get your feel for your dress: First, lying down on the couch, try and get a nice idea of what exactly you want in your mind. Sounds great, isn't it? Go with it. Then close your eyes, picture your wedding day in your mind. Light breeze lifts your hair, the ocean smells good, and you could even touch the love and joy of your big day. Which dress are you wearing and compliment perfectly this whole scene? Think of fashion elements- ethereal, floaty, light, sexy, backless, modern, romantic, etc... Take down what you come up in your 'day dream'. And find your dress follow this kind of inspiration. Fit is more important than anything: then we come to the most flattering style of your body shape. Different styles are designed for different body types as long as you want to avoid your flaws, minimize them, and then show best of your features to all of your guests. So fit is the most important. And doing this will ensure that all eyes are on you. Body shape analysis could be seen everywhere on the internet, know more about yourself by that. Choose the Formality: Once you have made sure the style you would like, it's time to decide your formality. Beach weddings generally tend to be a more informal one, as long as it doesn't have some conflict with your wedding theme and decor. You can also make a plain white sundress into something a little more formal by using a luxurious fabric or adding some beading or sequins. And you can tone down a more formal cut like a mermaid wedding dress by having it made in a less formal fabric like a cotton or linen. The choice is yours. Choose the Fabric: Have got your "feel" of your dress, your style and the formality of the dress, it's turn of fabric. As mentioned above, you can choose to contrast your more formal style with an informal fabric, or jazz up an informal cut with a more elaborate fabric. If you are looking for some typical fabric for beach wedding dresses, organza, tulle, charmeuse, crepe and chiffon will be appropriate. Even raw silk and lace can be used to create lovely dresses for a seaside wedding. Convenience and Practicality: An important factor should be take into consideration when having a destination wedding, it necessary to choose a style that can be transported easily without creasing too much. A smaller dress that you can fold to carry on luggage is another good option. And beach wedding is usually on hot summer, find a cool dress.
